Mentor Interview
How did you first get into the radio business?
I lost a bet in high school. I don't remember what the bet was, but I lost, and I had to do a radio show. I ended up loving it. It was the school radio program, and I had almost free reign over it. People didn't like to mess with me because I'd rip 'em one on the radio if they did.
What's the most important thing to know about doing well in radio?
To do well in radio, you have to be prepared for anything. On the air, in the office, anywhere. You have to be ready for just about everything. Ready to react and respond. You can't have an "uuuhhh" moments, because then people get bored and tune out. We're here providing a service to these people, and if they aren't hearing anything, well they're gonna find someone else to service them. Also, be interesting. No one wants to listen to some bore on the radio. Be lively! Energetic! Exciting! Be something! Bring something to the table that's you and you'll do excellently.
What's your most wild radio story?
I was working in LA at Pirate Radio, which by the way was the number one rated radio station in Los Angeles at the time. We were recording some new advertisements, and I had to go to the bathroom. So I go, and it's this small bathroom with one urinal. I'm taking a leak, and in comes Ozzy Osbourne! He comes up besides me at the same urinal, unzips his pants, and starts peeing into the same urinal as me! I'm like, "Holy crap! Ozzy Osbourne!" And he says in his Ozzy voice, "Hey, mate." We finish our pee and part ways. I go back to where we're recording and it turns out we're working with Ozzy! He turns to the rest of the people in there and says, "I just shared a nice piss with this man."
