Mask Project Reflection
1. Now that you have finished your first project, how is Project Based Learning (PBL) different from or similar to what you have experienced before? Give at least 3 specific ways it is similar or different.
Project Based Learning, or PBL, is different in several ways than how I was learning before. Before coming to AHS, a PBL school, my learning had been primarily going through a book and finding answer to a worksheet. None of the stuff I learned from the book actually stuck with me. After doing this project, however, it feels as if I will be remembering everything I learned during this unit. Making a project cause me to actually think about what I was putting down, for if I didn’t, I would not have gotten a good grade. I feel as if putting everything we learned during this unit into one final project really helped me capitalize on my learning.
2. Which habit of heart and mind do you need to work on in your next project to get better at PBI? Show don’t tell why you need to improve and how that HOHAM will help you.
Throughout this entire project, I had a hard time trying to decide what I would do for my mask. As a straight, white male living in a middle class household, I didn’t have any agent groups associated with me except for age. After staring at a blank computer screen for thirty minutes trying to think of what I was going to write, I had moved on to a different subject. This happened one or two different times before I finally got stuck on my last essay idea. Going through all of these ideas caused me to get the project done within the final minutes of the time it was due. I feel that if I would had advocated for myself, that I would have had much more time.
3. What are you most proud of about your mask? Why?
I am really proud of the fact that I was able to get my mask done in such a short amount of time. As stated earlier, I went through many different project ideas before coming up with my final one just days before the project was due. Not only did I complete it in a short amount of time, but I also made it look good. It makes me wonder how well I could’ve made it if I spent the whole allotted time on this idea.
4. Quote the section of your essay that you are most proud of and describe, in detail, why you are proud of it.
I will not lie; my Invisible Knapsack gives me a lot of privileges other races do not, and I appreciate having these, but I also feel like other races should have these privileges too. It is not right for us, white people, to have much more than what everyone else has. The sooner we can eliminate the Invisible Knapsack, the sooner we can achieve racial equality.
This paragraph is what made me the most proud. I feel that it flowed together very well, and that it was well written. I also feel that it summarized the essay up well.
5. What do you want to take with you and remember from this project?
I want to remember everything from this project. It really opened up my eyes and I believe that this is all valuable information. This project was very interesting, and I hope to share the idea of Sociology with others in the future.
